Deb Goldman
ARTIST STATEMENT
I have been paring down to essentials, limiting possibilities to explore deeply rather than widely. After a career in ceramics, where I limited myself to one material, porcelain, and one basic tool, the wheel, I explored texture, light and translucency, rather than color. I am now exploring drawing. A piece of paper, graphite and ink are my tools. I am interested in seeing where my hand leads me. I make a mark, then I respond to that mark with another one. Patterns, symbols, and stories emerge.
BIO
Following a circuitous route that began by studying Art History at Boston University, to graduate studies in education at Bank Street College, Deborah Goldman began studying ceramics while teaching young children. Her discovery of the translucent properties of porcelain led to a 30 year career teaching ceramics at the Spence School in NYC and exhibiting her work both nationally and internationally. After retirement Deborah began exploring 2D art, first with classes in landscape at the Art Students League, and the figure at the Woodstock School of art, and most recently, abstract art with Meredith Rosier at the Woodstock School of Art.
